Why 1.73 for 3 phase power calculation
And as a side question for the student, as to why or how, one may ask, did sqrt 3 become the 'go to' number rather than tan 60? After all, if not a perfectly symmetric 3 phase system, the tan phase angle number will provide more accurate number for non symmetric systems. I still haven't found that answer, just that it is used. Carultch Senior Member. Location Massachusetts. Thesparky said:. Click to expand Johnhall30 Member.
The "simple" answer After reading the entire original thread I did not see the answer so here's my input. I've been doing industrial electrical and instrumentation work for 38 years, starting out as an apprentice electrician and working up through the ranks to superintendent. I now work in the corporate office as a Senior Lead estimating and providing project support.
These are the formulas I use on a regular basis 3 phase only. I hope this helps to answer the original question. I'd greatly appreciate it if somebody can answer my original question which came up when I was updating my spreadsheet with these formulas and wondered Why is it the square root of three 1. I'm sure I learned this back in college but can't remember, not that I'm getting old or have killed too many brain cells Thank you Carultch!!! Makes perfect sense!

I can honestly say it took writing down the equations and solving the problems to remember and understand the sqrt 3 vs. Also, your re-explanation during the live classes have been very helpful! The step by step instructions in this article are great! After reading this and watching your in-class explanation, the sqrt 3 makes much more sense.
Thanks for bringing this to my attention. This is one of our first articles and it appears that mistake has been there for quite some time. I just corrected is so that VBN has the correct angle of negative degrees, and VCN has the correct angle of positive degrees. I also updated all of the diagrams since they were previously hand-drawn.

Comments Wye and delta configurations have been a constant source no pun intended of weakness in remembering when to convert voltages and currents to line versus phase and then dealing with single and 3 phase equivalents.
Regardless still a great pun. Thanks for the feedback Karli. Search Delivery. Just a moment This application uses your local weather and energy rates.
