Why is she called mr saavik
There was no such thing as female crew members on board submarines at the time this film was conceived. Today, there are! It is conceivable that in the future "mister" becomes a gender neutral term of address for military officers.
Member since January Why is this certain again? As noted above, in real life, I've never seen this. I'm talking about in Starfleet. Real life is irrelevant; Star Trek is a science fiction television program me that takes place hundreds of years into a fictional universe.
Applying real life standards seems illogical. I largely agree with you, and it's not worth a ton of trons. But real life is relevant it if collides with the reality on the screen. That screen reality is sufficiently convincing to allow me to believe in warp drive, a transporter and photon torpedoes.
But the entire 'Mister' part took me out of the film admittedly for only a brief second for no payoff on the backend. This wasn't a way cool plot device that they took a chance on. But a convoluted belief that in the future all women in the military use a male English honorific? A beautiful woman that we were supposed to be attached to or recognize is attractive and they use 'Mister?
And I think in actuality the line was to be spoken by Sulu and they just didn't change the script, but I can't prove that. Woth all due respect, I think the point went completely over your head. It's not a "male English honorific" title years from now, it's an honorific English title for everyone. Beauty and gender should not negate the honor of a title, nor vice versa. The title should remain equally honorific whether the target is beautiful or not, male or not.
Yeah, that's a bit relevant, and wasn't worth whatever they were trying to accomplish I disagree. My mom for example really liked that aspect of the film as she's felt that Sir has always been treated as more honorific and authoritative than "ma'am" which she finds silly. And I think in actuality the line was to be spoken by Sulu and they just didn't change the script, but I can't prove that Saavik is called Mister throughout the film, by both Kirk and Spock.
Director Nicholas Meyer is on record as stating calling a female officer mister was intentional. Too Much Fun , Jul 5, Evans , Jul 5, Okay, I wouldn't know about that because I hardly watched Voyager, but that reminds me of something I wanted to ask that somewhat relates to this thread's question: Did anyone ever call Janeway m'am?

This now, he realizes is the greatest gift his father has ever given him. The one he fell in love with. Spock does not know how old he is, or what moment triggered it, when he falls in love with Captain James Tiberius Kirk.
Sarek maintains that he married Amanda because it was logical to do so, since as the Vulcan ambassador, it would of course fall upon Sarek to observe human behavior. Picard meets with the Starfleet Commander in Chief, Admiral Kirsten Clancy, a middle aged woman with more than a few surface similarities to Janeway.
Bridge card games. Why are female Vulcans called Mr?
